Safe And Sound

Why does my mind push me over each time? When I am walking on a steady path

The water comes in too fast

The past enters my mind

Causing pain deep inside

I have to remind myself that I am free

I am safe

I am going to be ok

I don’t have to fear life
But when my mind is in ‘flight’ or ‘fight’

Everything around me seems to be a threat

Every footstep is a fear

Every individual is dangerous whether I know them or not
I have got to breathe and continue to fight to be free

However much the memories scar my brain
I must fight through the pain

I will continue to look forward to each day

I will leave yesterday behind and continue to fight with all of my might

I will hold on tight and everything will be alright
